You don't even need EVERYONE armed for a polite society. I don't know -- If one in ten people carried a pistol, that would be terrible odds for any would-be mass murderer or violent criminal.
Knowing that there's a good chance you'll get shot before meeting your psychopathic goals would be a very effective deterrent.
Right now, there's pretty good odds that you could walk into a crowded theater and not a single person is armed.
Having every person in a society is overkill, literally, and also dangerous. Accidents happen, especially involving people not well-trained with guns.
I don't like gun nuts, I don't like gun-haters who faint at the sight of a scary black rifle. If a common ground of responsible people kept a weapon near, I don't see why that's not sensible. |
